The Mexico City Government launched the city's first cycling path in 2003 to promote bicycle use as an alternative to polluting automobiles. For 60 kilometers it passes through the Miguel Hidalgo, Alvaro Obregón, Magdalena Contreras and Tlalpan delegations.Though not perfect - some spots are impassable or impractical, like the lines painted on the sidewalk in front of the Anthropology Museum- the clclovia represents a big step forward for Mexico City cyclists, enabling them to take to the streets instead of being confined to parks. It also promotes the bicycle as a serious means of transport, says Areli Carreón, a founder of the urban cycling group Bicitekas and a Greenpeace consultant. Each Sunday between 8am-2pm you can cycle, walk, run or skate down a traffic-free Paseo dela Reforma from the Bosque de Chapultepec to the Zöcalo, as well as through rotating delegaciones. The last Sunday of each month is the Ciclotón Familiar - a 32 km traffic-free route through the city. A bike mechanic, doctor and hydration are at the disposal of participants and nearly five hundred bicycles are available on loan. More information, below.
FACTS ABOUT BICYCLE RIDING IN MEXICO CITY
  •  It is the cheapest, fastest, increasingly most favored alternative method of transportation.
  • We must create a Culture of Prevention in Safe Bicycle Riding by always using our helmets, wearing gloves, drive DEFENSIVELY, never offensively. What this means is that everyone has the right of way, automobiles, trucks,  pedestrians, vendors. Cyclists proceed to cross the street only until it is completely safe, all cars have come to a COMPLETE STOP.
  • According Norma Pensamiento, a journalist that specializes in bicycle riding in Mexico City and to the Mexican Government Statistics Center -INEGI- about 1.2 % of Mexico City's population in the huge metropolitan area ride bicycles daily.
  • The thefts of bicycles are increasing. Many of the  bicycles stolen in Mexico City end up in other cities, such as Guadalajara, Veracruz, Mazatlán, etc. Always lock your bike. Investing in a high-quality lock will give you rewarding results. According to our reliable  sources about 1 million bicycles are stolen in the United States each year. Daily, approximately 3,000 bicylces are stolen, valued at an average cost of $ 265. The total value of 1,000,000 bikes stolen annually is .. $ 265 million US dollars!
  • The Mexico City Government has instituted a MUEVETE EN BICI program during weekends. This is their 2008 Activities Calendar Confirming attendance previously, Hashers meet every Sunday at 10 am at Minatitlán 12, Roma to ride bicycles, no cost. Afternoon social activities, Dutch Treat. Lots of nice places to choose from. This is the Ciclovia MAP, thanks to Alain Garcia. Also on Sundays we can transport our bicycles in the subway, enabling to travel to distant locations within Mexico City.
